Foot and ankle pain can originate from various sources, including the foot itself or areas such as the knee, hip, and lower back, which are commonly involved.

Improper function of the feet and ankles can have a ripple effect throughout the body. It may lead to soreness in the leg muscles, reduced mobility, an uneven walking pattern, and discomfort in the hips and lower back.

The ankle's stability depends on the interaction of muscles, ligaments, and tendons that hold the bones together. When an injury occurs, it can impact these structures as well as the bones themselves.

Causes

Sprains and Strains

Sprains involve stretching or tearing of ligaments, while strains refer to injuries to muscles or tendons. Both can result from sudden twists, falls, or overuse, leading to pain, swelling, and limited movement in the foot and ankle.

Arthritis

This condition involves inflammation of the joints, leading to pain, swelling, and stiffness. In the foot and ankle, arthritis can result from wear and tear (osteoarthritis) or autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis), causing significant discomfort and mobility issues.

Achilles Tendonitis:

Overuse or repetitive stress can lead to inflammation of the Achilles tendon, connecting the calf muscles to the heel bone. This results in pain and stiffness at the back of the ankle, particularly after physical activity

Stress Fractures

These are small cracks in the bones caused by repetitive force or overuse, common in athletes or individuals engaging in high-impact activities. Stress fractures in the foot or ankle lead to localized pain that worsens with activity and improves with rest.

Flat Feet (Pes Planus)

Flat feet occur when the arches of the feet collapse, causing the entire sole to touch the ground. This can lead to overpronation, where the foot rolls inward excessively, straining the muscles and ligaments, and resulting in pain in the feet, ankles, and even the lower back.

Nerve Damage or Injury (Sciatica)

Nerve damage, such as that from sciatica, can cause radiating pain down the leg into the foot and ankle. This may manifest as sharp pain, tingling, or numbness, affecting mobility and quality of life.

Bursitis (Joint Inflammation)

Bursae are small fluid-filled sacs that cushion bones, tendons, and muscles near joints. Inflammation of these sacs, known as bursitis, can cause pain and swelling in the foot or ankle, often around the big toe, heel, or ankle joint.

Our Approach to Treating  Foot/An Pain

Some foot conditions may cause only a slight discomfort, while others can significantly impair a person's ability to walk.

Chiropractic adjustments can be applied to various joints, including those in the feet and ankles. These adjustments can help improve ankle strength, as well as enhance mobility, flexibility, and stability.

Following a comprehensive consultation and detailed examination to identify the source and cause of the pain, a personalised care plan can be created. This plan may include adjustments, stretches, rehabilitative exercises, and ergonomic guidance tailored to the individual’s needs.
