Sciatica is a common condition involving irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which is the largest and longest nerve in the body. This nerve originates in the lower back, travels through the pelvis, extends down each leg, and reaches the feet.

The pain associated with sciatica can develop gradually and worsen over time. It may be triggered or intensified by activities such as sitting for long periods, coughing, or sneezing. Symptoms can range from a mild ache to sharp, shooting, burning, or even excruciating pain. While some individuals experience debilitating discomfort, others may have infrequent, less severe symptoms that still have the potential to progress over time.

Causes

Several factors can contribute to the development of sciatic symptoms, including a herniated disc in the spine, which presses on the sciatic nerve, and bony spurs or abnormal bone growth that can irritate or compress the nerve.

Trauma or injury to the lower back or pelvis, infections causing inflammation in the spine, and spinal stenosis, which is the narrowing of the spinal canal, are also common causes. Additionally, abnormal growths, such as tumours in the spine, can place pressure on the sciatic nerve, leading to varying degrees of pain and discomfort.
